Year 5/6

Welcome to Year 5/6 Class Page

We will share with you our learning journey on this page.  You can also find useful links to websites and access homework and video clips which may help children extend their learning.

Autumn Term Overview 2025-2026

This half term our Christian value is Hope and our daily collective worship will focus on this value.

This term in English, the children will be consolidating previously taught grammatical features, learning new key grammatical features as well as deepening their understanding of sentence types. Our whole class text is ‘The 1000 year old boy’ by Ross Welford and our reading and writing will link to our text as well as our science topic on Forces, our Geography topic on Scandinavia and our History topic on the Vikings.  We will be writing character and setting descriptions as well as a diary entry and a Viking Saga. We will also be writing Autumnal poetry.

In Mathematics,  Years 5 and 6 will be learning about place value, the four operations and fractions.   In addition to this, Year 6 will also be learning about imperial and metric measures.

In Science, we will be learning about Forces and Light. The children will be learning about the laws of gravity and the scientist, Isaac Newton. We will also be exploring air resistance, water resistance and friction. We will then be investigating how light travels in straight lines, how mirrors reflect light, how refraction changes how light travels, as well as exploring prisms.

Our European Geography study is Scandinavia where we will be learning about both its physical and human geography.  This will then be followed by a History unit of work on the Viking invaders.

In November we will deepen our knowledge on the World Wars by focusing on World War One as we mark Remembrance Sunday.

In French we will be learning how to talk about ourselves and our family.

In Computing we will be looking at how the internet is used to communicate and collaborate with others as well as the safety issues this can bring.  We will then look at web pages and how to manage online information.

We will be thinking about what our rights and responsibilities are in PSHE and the effect we have on the world and people around us.

In R.E. we will be thinking about what factors influence our view of the world and then focus on the world views of those that follow the Hindu and Islamic faiths.

We shall have PE on a Tuesday afternoon; children will be able to come in their PE kits on this day. If there is any change to this, you will be notified through Arbor.

In addition to this, children will need to read 3 times per week and have their reading records signed.

I hope that you find all of this information helpful and I look forward to sharing our class journey with you throughout the year.
