Welcome to Year 5/6 Class Page
We will share with you our learning journey on this page. You can also find useful links to websites and access homework and video clips which may help children extend their learning.
Summer Term Overview 2026
This half term our Christian value is friendship and our daily collective worship will focus on this value.
This term in English, we will be exploring how to enhance mood and atmosphere with descriptions on Ancient Athens using sentence starters, amplification and the senses. We will be exploring how to create a flashback to add depth to a description. We will also be using sentence structure to build tension and suspense in a planned piece of narrative based on our class novel, ‘Who Let The Gods Out?’ by Maz Evans.
In Mathematics, Year 6 will be learning about angles, averages, geometry and problem solving as well as having the opportunity to revisit previous learning in preparation for their SATs tests (commencing Monday 11th May). Year 5 will also develop their knowledge of geometry, including angles, properties of shapes, position and direction before moving on to place value work which will include decimal and negative numbers. They will finish the year learning about measure and the conversion of units.
In Science, we will be exploring animals including humans, being able to describe different parts of the circulatory systems, describe the functions of the heart, blood vessels and blood. We will also be exploring the impact of diet and exercise on our bodies.
In History we will be learning about the ancient Greek period and how its legacy impacts us today.
After half term, we will be focusing on the Geography of our local area.
In French, we will be learning about how to describe the clothes that people are wearing.
In Computing we will be learning about video production and vector graphics.
There will be an Art focus in the first half term where we will be learning about Leonardo da Vinci (in particular his anatomical, scientific work) followed by a sustainable textiles study in D.T.
As we come to the end of the year we will be thinking about changes and relationships in PSHE.
In R.E. we will be considering the role art can have in helping people express their beliefs.
We shall have PE on a Tuesday and Thursday afternoons; children will be able to come in their PE kits on this day. The beginning of the term will have an invasion games focus (including tag rugby) and we will then move on to athletics in preparation for the school’s sports day.
In addition to this, children will need to read 3 times per week and have their reading records signed.
I hope that you find all of this information helpful and I look forward to sharing our class journey with you throughout the year.
