Year 1/2

Welcome to Year 1/2 Class Page

We will share with you our learning journey on this page.  You can also find useful links to websites and access homework and video clips which may help children extend their learning.

Spring Term Overview 2025-2026

Our value for this half term is Equality and children will be encouraged to reflect on this value during daily Collective Worship.

In English,

we will be starting the term by writing letters to the community about aspiring to be agents of change. The children will reflect on what they have achieved in 2025 and how they aspire for a new goal in 2026. There will still be a focus on handwriting and grammar as in the Autumn term to make sure that we are making our work look incredible for every piece, every time.

In mathematics

In Year 1, we are going to be starting our Numbers to 20 topic. This will start with us counting forwards and backwards within 20 and developing a deeper understanding of the numbers within this range. We will use lots of different manipulatives such as cubes, counters, tens frames and number lines to help support our learning. We will also be learning to count in our 2s, 5s and 10s.

In Year 2, our next topic is Money! We will be learning what each coin and note represent and how to count them. We will then apply this when looking at how to calculate with money, helping us to develop our understanding of buying items and receiving change! We will also be looking at how to count in our 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s to support our times tables knowledge.

This term in Science,

we are moving on to Animals including Humans, with a focus on Humans. We will start by looking at life cycles of different animals, including humans. Then we will be exploring what animals, including humans, need to survive and how important exercise and healthy eating is for humans. Your artistic skills will be put to the test when you need to draw and label a simple human body and name each sense that is associated with our bodies. Our spotlight scientist will be Helen Keller.

In RE,

our topic is God (Islam). We will start by recapping who God is to us and link that to what we know about God in Christianity. Then we will have a look at the religion Islam and what Muslims believe about their God. After this, we will be looking at Creation and Harmony and how Muslims belief that their God created the world with harmony. We will then link this with the idea that Muslims live on a straight path and sometimes they need guidance to help them along the way. We will also learn about the special person in Islam – Prophet Muhammad and how he received the Qur’an from Angel Jibril.

PE: This will take place every ThursdayChildren are welcome to come to school in their PE kit.

Phonics

Throughout KS1, the children will learn the skills to become great readers through Read Write Inc sessions each morning. They will build upon what has already been taught in Foundation, including how to decode, segment and blend words. These skills will help them in English lessons. The children are encouraged to use their knowledge of phonics to help them when spelling/writing words. To assist with this, there are a range of resources within the classroom, including sound mats, to support them.

Along with daily RWI and English lessons, we have a daily Maths lesson which once again builds on their knowledge of number from Foundation and introduces a range of mathematical concepts that the children will need to know before moving into KS2. As all children learn in different ways, there are a range of resources and concrete materials to support the children with this.

Afternoons consist of a range of  subjects, including Religious Education, Personal Social Health Citizenship and Education, Computing, Geography, History, Art, Design & Technology and Physical Education.

Learning together at home:

There is an expectation that children read and access “Numbots” at least 3 times a week. The login for “Numbots” has been stuck inside their reading records. Occasionally, children can also participate in whole class or whole school projects linking to school learning on Seesaw.

I hope that you find all of this information helpful and I look forward to sharing our class journey with you throughout the year.
