Year 1/2
Welcome to Year 1/2 Class Page

We will share with you our learning journey on this page. You can also find useful links to websites and access homework and video clips which may help children extend their learning.
Autumn Term Overview 2025-2026
Our value for this half term is Hope and children will be encouraged to reflect on this value during daily Collective Worship.
In English,
we will be having a big focus on handwriting and grammar skills this term. This means we will be learning about our 4 handwriting lines and how to use them to help form our letters and numbers correctly. We will also be starting to explore nouns, adjectives, verbs and much more! These features are most important, especially when building sentences so we will make sure that we are experts! Year 2 will have spelling rules to learn which will help us to understand how to spell lots of different and interesting vocabulary which we can use in our work!
In Mathematics,
In Year 1, we have started our Numbers to 10 topic. This means we will be making sure we know how to count from 0 – 10 and back again as well as counting on or back from any number. We will learn how to represent numbers and also how to subitise (instantly knowing how many without counting) between 1 and 10. We will use lots of different manipulatives such as cubes, counters, tens frames and number lines to help support our learning. We will also be learning to count in our 2s, 5s and 10s.
In Year 2, our Numbers to 100 topic has been successful so far! We have been learning how to recognise and build numbers using 10s and 1s, using both equipment and drawings of them. We will also be looking at how to count in our 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s to support our times tables knowledge.
In Science, we will be learning all about Materials with a focus on fabrics. Our spotlight scientist is Charles Macintosh who made the waterproof jacket. We will be conducting tests with different materials to see which are waterproof to make a waterproof coat for a teddy bear. We will also look at the properties of different materials like wood, glass, plastic and many more.
In RE,
our topic is God (Christianity). We will be looking at God as the creator and introducing the creation story as well as extending our thinking deeper to think about how God felt after he created the different parts of the world. We will move on to explore God and his special people who helped to spread his messages on Earth. We will also look at Jesus and how he is God incarnate (one of our key words) and the special journey Jesus went on throughout his time on Earth.
PE: This will take place every Thursday. Children are welcome to come to school in their PE kit.
Phonics
Throughout KS1, the children will learn the skills to become great readers through Read Write Inc sessions each morning. They will build upon what has already been taught in Foundation, including how to decode, segment and blend words. These skills will help them in English lessons. The children are encouraged to use their knowledge of phonics to help them when spelling/writing words. To assist with this, there are a range of resources within the classroom, including sound mats, to support them.

Along with daily RWI and English lessons, we have a daily Maths lesson which once again builds on their knowledge of number from Foundation and introduces a range of mathematical concepts that the children will need to know before moving into KS2. As all children learn in different ways, there are a range of resources and concrete materials to support the children with this.
Afternoons consist of a range of subjects, including Religious Education, Personal Social Health Citizenship and Education, Computing, Geography, History, Art, Design & Technology and Physical Education.
Learning together at home:
There is an expectation that children read and access “Numbots” at least 3 times a week. The login for “Numbots” has been stuck inside their reading records. Occasionally, children can also participate in whole class or whole school projects linking to school learning on Seesaw.

I hope that you find all of this information helpful and I look forward to sharing our class journey with you throughout the year.
